June 12. We're getting ready to start our journey. The bike and kayak have to be loaded for the drive to California. Tucker's ready to go. I'm sure he wonders what is taking us so long.
July 5. Going through Spanish Fork Canyon, trying to get across the Utah mountains. July 5. The sky was threatening on the bypass between Spanish Fork and Indian Creek Canyon.
July 6 (174). Stopped by another storm. No one else seemed concerned. Storms build up and blow over everyday - it's so dry the rain never hits the ground. July 6 (67). The sign for Neola, Utah. This style of sign is everywhere - towns, ranches.

July 8 (21). The ranch of Josie Basset Morris is also part of the Monument area. Sally, who had wanted to be a cowboy when little, was taken by the history of Josie and her mother and sister. They ranched this area in the Butch Cassidy era, and were still here in the 1960's. July 8 (6). Stan makes it to the Colorado line! We camped that night on the village green of Maybell - with thousands of mosquitoes - thanks Billy for the Off.
July 9 (43). Another storm. You can see the rain in the sky, not reaching the ground. July 9 (46). Now Stan doesn't stop - just keeps heading toward the clouds.
July 9 (8). The Yampa River. Steamboat Springs - the next destination - is in the background.
July 10 (12). The annual Balloon Rodeo - close to 50 hot air balloons over head. Thanks, Ellen, for making your house available to us, even though you weren't here and didn't get to ride with Stan. July 10 (18). We knew that the columbine was the Colorado state flower, but didn't realize how beautiful they are - not like the eastern wild columbines.
July 10 (17). The view from Howelson Park (where Capt. Carl Howelson broguth skiing to the area in 1915) over the village of Steamboat to today's ski resort. July 10 (24). Combining the cultures - ranch and resort.
July 11 - Sally had Pearl Lake (north of Steamboat Springs) pretty much to herself-a very special place - beneath the apsens, the far bank was covered with columbine and wild roses. July 12 - leaving Steamboat and heading up Rabbit Ear Pass, on the way to Rocky Mtn. Nat. Park.
July 12 - Hard climb to the top of the pass. Made it!! July 12 - The view of what is to come next - Rocky Mountain National Park.
July 13 - Sally kayaked at Shadow Mountain Lake - the white birds out in the lake are pelicans. In the Rockies?! July 13 - Entering the park. We camped in the park - Sally went ahead to get one of the last sites. "Full" by the time Stan got there.

July 14 - A flat tire on the climb in Rocky Mtn. Park. thanks, Bud, for your help. Jluy 14 - The Continental Divide again. We took pictures for many other people here.
July 14 - By the time we got to the Alpine Visitors Center, the afternoon thunder storm had begun. July 14 - Heard a great talk by a ranger - this spot has the most concentrated lightning hits in the country.
July 15 - Drove back up to the top to continue the ride. 1/3 of this park is above the tree line. July 15 - The Trail Ridge Road is the highest paved road in the country. Yes, that's the road down below.
July 15 - The drop off from this road is straight down - the view is truly awesome. July 15 - riding above the snow line.

July 15 - Tucker waits in the Upper Beavor meadow. July 15 - Out of the park and into the canyon of the Big Thompson River.
July 16 - the landscape has changed - to grasslands - we tried to image seeing this area from a wagon train. July 16 - We saw "Open Range" signs al through the west.
July 16 - Sally set off through the grasslands toward Pawnee Buttes where James Mitchner had researched his book Centennial. July 16 - Up over a little bit of a rise and there were - not the Buttes - but "open range" cattle in the road.
July 17 - the land changes again as we start to get into farmland. July 17 - a common scene in every little town we enter.
July 17 - a great museum in Sterling Colorado - the largest exhibitof branding irons - tracing some back to the pioneers. July 17 - the water tower for Fleming - a sign that we're approaching the mid-west.
July 18 - We didn't expect Nebraska to look like this. July 18 - Another time zone reached!!
July 19 - This diner in Atlanta Nebraska was full of Cornhusker posters - these people had real FANS. July 20 - This is what we were expecting - cornfields right to the edge of town.
July 20 - There seem to be certain "themes" for this journey - branding (or rustling) cattle is one of them. July 20 - Stan has always loved trains - this too is a common sight.
July 21 - Tucker at the IAMS plant outside of Auroura. The people invited me in for a tour - Tucker had to wait for the samples. Congratulations, Brad, and thanks for a geat tour - I really felt like a VIP. July 21 - A town's water tower can say much about the town - Seward is NE's "4th of July city."
July 21 - This one is for you, Dale (Stan's brother hasn't lived in NE for years but is still an incurable Huskers FAN) July 22 - The route thru Lincoln was not really "bike friendly".
July 22 - We camped at Branched Oak Lake. Sally kayaked early morning - and saw - again - pelicans?! July 22 - Nebraskas barns have a different look - many of them are white.
July 22 - Stan in the corn. The sweet corn is incredible - people kept giving it to Sally. And it was great. July 22 - Crossed the Missouri on a provate toll bridge. Hi to the "Plattsmouth troll".
July 22 - Iowa! July 23 - Stan on the Morman Pioneer trail - except they were going west.
July 24 - Great mural on a building in Fontelle. July 24 - The Roseman covered bridge - one of the "Bridges of Madison County" seen in the movie.
July 24 - Stan at the boyhood home of John Wayne in Winterset. The good gutyof the movies. July 25 - Tucker at the boyhood home of Wyatt Earp in Pella. The real good guy.
